ADSL in Thailand at Western Prices?

Working online in Thailand poses many difficult hurdles - the largest of which is a reliable and fast internet connection. When I got a letter from True (formerly TA) explaining that my 10,000 baht/month sluggish ADSL connection would be upgraded for free to a line twice as fast for 1,500 baht, I literally jumped out of my chair. Obviously recent government pressure and other lobbying has finally managed to loosen the CAT's (Communication Authority of Thailand) grip on the nations bandwidth. All I can really say is it's about freaking time.

I have been using the 512/256 kbps package for 2 weeks now and I am very impressed. The ISP obviously has a bigger pipe to the regional backbone and from the looks of some of my testing the entire networks infrastructure has had some physical improvements. One thing that still sucks however is True's ridiculous use of ISP caching, which means you are not always getting the most recent version of a website even if you force your browser to not cache the request. This is particularly annoying if you are updating websites.

I feel a little put off advertising for these guys since they have been ripping me off blind for 2 years but this information may prove useful for anyone still using dial-up. Here are the prices for True's new ADSL packages.

Great info again Lance. Way to keep the masses informed. I too am one of the unfortunates raped by the countries internet providers' greed. Im opting for the big 4096/512 connection. Will report back if/when they get around to hooking me up.

i have purchase the true adsl package and i should say this is just another lie ! but not true the spped check for my connectivity shows 100 ! but i have signed fo the package with 1024 / 512 !

liers !

marc welcome to Thailand. True has oversold their bandwidth Nana ladyboy style. I upgraded to a faster package 2056/512 and can BARELY notice an improvement. My rating is now 180kbps. WTF.

I can tell you that if you want True/AsiaNet's "guaranteed" 512kbps SDSL (symmetric) - guaranteed 512kbps up and down, it costs 30,000 baht per month. Otherwise, yer stuck with the consumer ADSL. As far as I can tell, paying for anything more than the 512kbps package is a waste. The faster packages have higher throttles but the service rarely, if ever, gives you those speeds. Read the Ts & Cs and I believe you will see that they do not guarantee the speed. Bandwidth costs money. Most of the WWW is hosted in North America and Europe. Thai ISPs/IXs have to pay ALL of the cost of bandwidth between here and the West, not half, so their costs are monumental.
