Land of Smiles, indeed!

missthailand.jpgThe last few days have provided me with a few of those "where else but Thailand?" moments.

It all kicked off on Friday night, out for a few beers with an old mate.

Where else but Thailand can you enjoy a top-quality covers band, complete with a six-foot ladyboy who's stacked like Tina Turner and belting out Whitney Houston and Frank Sinatra standards with equal aplomb?

Where else but Thailand can you be waiting to catch a taxi when you see not one, but two military police, in full uniform including knob-end helmets, blast down a busy major road at about 50 mph on a large drab olive green quad bike?

And where else but Thailand can you see dumpy, five-foot Eddie the Eagle look alike, complete with eyeglasses that look like they were made from Coke bottles and a jiggling beer gut that makes him look eight months pregnant, waddle down Patpong 2 in a t-shirt that proudly proclaims, "Sweden - Land of the Vikings"?

Where else but Thailand can a guy like that get a girlfriend?

What makes you think that guy wasn't there to bang 12 yr old boys?

Nothing. I only asked where else a guy like that can get a girlfriend.

Where else could this actualy be a story?

hey Rick I know this is a bit off the subject but I wanna live in thailand for a few years is teaching english my only option?

Depends. Unless you get hired from outside Thailand, teaching is probably your only option here. If you have a university degree, you probably can find legal work as a teacher of English but I've never been a teacher (Thais have no idea how lucky they are.), so I'm no expert. At the moment, it appears that there is no real impediment to working as a teacher here, ability being the least of their requirements. Whether or not you take the risk of doing it without all the correct paperwork is up to you. Exporting Thai products is another popular option but, in reality, is not much of an option for most people, unless you stick to low-scale eBaying. As with any business, if you have the customers, nothing else matters. If you have no customers, nothing else matters. Comprendez?
