Girl slashed to death in horror ritual slaying

Ratchaburi - A 10-year-old girl died after her throat was repeatedly slashed by her mother and three aunts who claimed she had brought evil to their village in Ratchaburi and that they were forced to sacrifice her to the Hindu god Indra.

Acting on a tip-off, police rushed to a two-storey wooden house in tambon Phaeng Phuay in Ratchaburi's Damnoen Saduak district. They found the body of the girl lying in pools of blood on the first floor.

She had suffered multiple slash wounds to her throat and had been dead for at least 10 hours when they arrived, police said. A table with ritual instruments, a blood-stained chopper, some hair soaked in a bowl and a burnt mattress were found near the body.

The girl was later identified as Prapassorn Jiamcharoen.

Police went to the second floor of the house after hearing people talking inside a room. They knocked but the occupants refused to open up.

The police decided to break the door down and found four women inside.

The women went berserk and attacked the officers with knives but were overpowered in a struggle. They were handcuffed but continued screaming insults at the police.

The women were identified as the girl's mother Kanchana Jiamcharoen, 50, and her three sisters, Bua 68, Anong, 45 and Jarin, 32. According to the police, the house belonged to Mrs Kanchana, who considered herself a spirit medium.

The woman said she was performing a ritual to free her daughter's soul as she had brought evil to the family and village. She had first asked her sister Mrs Anong to cut down all the village coconut trees and then kill the girl.

Mrs Anong used the chopper to slit the girl's throat and cut off her hair and soak it with water on Mrs Kanchana's instructions. The girl's clothes and mattress were then burned as her mother performed a ritual sacrifice to the Hindu god Indra.

Mrs Kanchana said she was able to contact the god directly.

She also claimed she had been preparing to pass on her daughter's soul into the god's care.

Pol Lt-Gen Chatchawan Sangraksa, an inspector at Damnoen Saduak police station, said the family's neighbours told him the four women said they could contact gods and spirits and that no one dared associate with them.

About 2am yesterday, neighbours heard screaming from the house. They alerted the Sawang Ratchaburi foundation, which sent its staff to the scene.

Jetsada Bunyarattanasrikhachorn, a foundation staff member who arrived at the house before anyone else, said he saw the four women surrounding the blood-splattered body of a girl.

Upon seeing him, they shouted abuse and blamed him for interrupting the ritual. They then fled upstairs, said Mr Jetsada, adding he later contacted the police.
