Girl refuses blood transfusion in the name of Jehovah

A 14 year old Vancouver girl stricken with bone cancer and her parents have been battling the courts in British Columbia for their right to refuse a blood transfusion. The family of three are devout Jehovah's Witnesses, a faith which interprets literally a passage from the scriptures that forbids the ingestion of blood. However, her doctor has said that he has never treated bone cancer without a blood transfusion. Chemotherapy affects the body's ability to replace blood cells and transfusions are often required.

"I don't want it," she said, of the blood transfusion doctors will administer if they believe it's warranted. "It's based on God's word. He told us to abstain from blood and we need to obey his commandments. Every thing that I do, I apply God's standard to it. Every decision I make, I apply God's standards."

As a result, the hospital contacted the British Columbia director of Child, Family and Community Service, which eventually obtained a court order allowing doctors to give the girl a transfusion if they believed it was warranted. The girl and her parents fought the order, but it was upheld by the British Columbia Supreme Court.

Hey, I'm all for a grown adult's right to refuse medical treatment if it conflicts with their religious beliefs. Lead the sheep to slaughter is a fitting fate for such idiocy and one less intellectually-challenged drone to pollute the gene pool in my opinion. However, we are talking about a child who has been indoctrinated by selfish, twisted parents, who are willing to let their daughter die in abidance to outrageously bigoted and ludicrous scriptures that were penned over 2000 years ago...well, thank Jehovah for the common decency of the girl's hospital and the Canadian legal system.

Just imagine if the entire population of mankind took the bible literally and followed every single one of its passages devoutly...
